Dony Hazarika hopes to get Assam folk into mainstream music

MUMBAI: In the past, we have seen renowned faces in the music fraternity like Zubeen Garg trying his best to promote Assamese music in mainstream music industry.  To give such endeavors the much needed push, music composer Dony Hazarika has come up with an album ‘Bohnimaan’.

Speaking to Radioandmusic.com, Hazarika said, “The music is released online and the CDs will be out by end of this month. The response for my Assamese’s folk based music album on digital has been good. The album is a confluence of variety of traditions and cultures.  It is also a combination of folk and electronic. The composition was done, with various instrument players who are based in Assam, through phone. It was difficult to get them here (Mumbai) to record.” Hazarika has, in the past, given theme songs in many popular soaps like Shoba Somnath ki, Tum Dena Saath Mera, Sanjog Se Bani Sangini, Geeta and Choti Bahu, to name few. He is also composing music for Main Aur Mr.Riight, an Adeeb Rais film.

Geetashree Rajkhowa, popularly known as Mizee has rendered the tracks. “Mizee approached me to do music for the album that she is doing. I have known her since she was little. When she approached me, she had mainstream style of music in mind, but I suggested that she take up folk music for her debut album. I am a supporter of Assamese folk music. Through this album, we have tried to push Assamese Folk music. I hope that my music compositions help plant Assamese Folk music seed in the mainstream.” There are about eight songs with Hindi lyrics fused with the pure Assamese folk compositions. The music is produced by Times Music.

The music has been programmed by Dony Hazarika, Ambar Das, Anuraag Saikia, Projjwal Dutta, Mrinmoy Sharma and Nilotpal Bora. The lyrics were penned by Virat Basoya, Vayu Shrivastav, Shaheen Iqbal and Imdad Sahil. The video of the title track has been directed by Rishi Paullah and Bitopan Kashyap. “We will not have any more video due to financial constrains.”
