David Bowie releases single 'Where Are We Now' after a decade

MUMBAI: Reclusive British pop star David Bowie has released a new single ‘Where Are We Now’ accompanied by a video.

After a decade long break, the iconic singer’s unveiling of the new track also coincides with his 66th birthday. The track will be available on iTunes.

"January the 8th is of course David Bowie's birthday, a timely moment for such a treasure to appear as if out of nowhere. Throwing shadows and avoiding the industry treadmill is very David Bowie despite his extraordinary track record," said a statement. The song was written by Bowie and recorded in New York.

The video directed by long term collaborator Tony Oursler for the single is reminiscent of Bowie's Berlin phase in the 1970s. The video features his face projected onto the body of a puppet. A young woman's face appears on another puppet next to him.

The new album titled ‘The Next Day’ to be released on 11 March will contain 14 tracks and there will be a deluxe version with three bonus tracks.

Bowie's label Columbia Records said the new song was a ‘treasure’  that appeared ‘as if out of nowhere’, underlining the element of surprise from a release that ends years of speculation among fans over whether he would record again.

"Throwing shadows and avoiding the industry treadmill is very David Bowie despite his extraordinary track record that includes album sales in excess of 130 million not to mention his massive contributions in the area of art, fashion, style, sexual exploration and social commentary," the label said.

Bowie, whose landmark works include ‘Space Oddity,’ ‘Heroes’, ‘To All The Young Dudes’ and ‘Let’s Dance’ has released no new material since 2003 and not performed live since 2006.
