Content to be a singer: Javed Ali

MUMBAI: Playback singer Javed Ali will never trade the mike for spotlight. Ali, who has crooned for a number of films since a decade, says he’s happy singing for the stars and films and knows his ‘limit’ extends to his vocal prowess.

“I know my limits and I will give priority to my first love that is singing. Apart from my well known songs (‘Ek Din Teri Raahon Mein’, ‘Jashn e Bahaaraa’) I have done a lot of work for the stars and films most people aren’t aware of.” Ali reveals.

Apart from playback singing, Ali has added being a mentor and anchor for shows like ‘Sa Re Ga Ma Pa’ to his resume. But the icing on his musical career is singing for Shah Rukh Khan in Yash Chopra’s ‘ Jab Tak Hai Jaan’.

“The almighty heard my prayers and fulfilled my dreams when I got to sing in Yash Chopra’s first film. I got to work with Shah Rukh khan, Lata Mangeshkar and Gulzar,” says Ali.

He said the quality of songs in Bollywood films depended on situations which are diminishing in today’s age of item songs.

“Singers are chosen for their textures. Each one of us (singers) have our own textures and is suited for certain songs and artists. Unlike yesteryears, where one playback singer would sing for the entire film, today it is very rare that a singer would do all the tracks for a movie. Rockstar where Mohit Chauhan sang for Ranbir Kapoor was an exception.”

Also the recent increase in actors lending voices for their films is not a new phenomenon, Ali pointed out that stars of the 60’s and 70’s often used to sing for their films. The recent trend that has a number of stars trying out their vocal talents will not last he said.

“If the stars really start to take up singing, maybe we singers should take up acting,” he quipped.
