Canadian S Asian music fest in July

MUMBAI: The seventh edition of the largest South Asian Arts festival in North America, Masala! Mehndi! Masti! (M!M!M!) will be held from 27 to 29 July 2007 in Canada.The fest showcases the best in contemporary, traditional and fusion South Asian culture by local and international artists. The venue for the fest is Bandshell Park, Exhibition Place (home of the CNE) 210 Princes` Boulevard, Toronto, ON Canada M6K 3C3. Rogers Masala! Mehndi! Masti! is co-presented by OMNI Diversity TV. The festival is produced by Satya Arts Association.

Among those scheduled to perform is Nandita Dias, a trained vocalist who sings in English, Spanish, Portuguese, French and Indian languages and is a dynamic song-writer with a variety of original material. She has performed in Canada, the United States, India, UAE and Costa Rica.

Also scheduled to perform are Indian Ocean, whose band members include Aseem Chakravarty, Amit Kilam, Rahul Ram and Susmit Sen, and Zzen, a band formed in 2005 by Toronto musicians, Brian Vegas and Salman Hussein. Brian is the guitarist for the band and Salman the vocalist. In the two years Zzen has been performing, the band already has enough material to put together an album. The band will include Sanf-E-Nazuk (In Search of the Rose) as one of the tracks included in the album. Zzen has been performing in and around Toronto. Also on the rolls is Falak, an internationally acclaimed Pakistani-Canadian band based in the Toronto area. Falak`s massive fan following and media visibility is owed to having performed over a hundred live shows spanning North America and Pakistan. Falak began as a dialogue between five like minded seasoned musicians drawn to creating music that was as socially relevant as it was musically innovative. The band members include: Farid Khan a folk singer and rock `n` roll troubadour, Siddig Mohammad on lead guitars, Zaed Maqbool`s precision beats and ambidextrous technique are the backbone of the bands sound. Maqbool has ingested copious quantities of rock, funk and folk music to create a style uniquely his own. Shibil Siddiqi on bass and Raheel Gauba`s on keyboards adds layers and textures that give Falak its unique edge.

Also scheduled to perform is singer/songwriter S W Storm who reigns out of London, England and is of Trinidadian heritage. He has produced eight albums with some singles along the way too working with producers such as "ShelShok", "Chris Alman", "Ossie Gurley"," Junior `Ibo` Joseph" to name a few. Throughout his career, he has toured his diverse brand of Soca music to all reaches of the UK, Europe, Canada, USA, Caribbean, Sri Lanka, and Qatar. His fusion of Soca, is flavored with blends of R&B, Bollywood, Bhangra, Pop, Reggae and Rock.

Among others on the MMM roster are Devika, who was one of the final 15 Popstars on Channel V in its first season, Afzal and Munni Subhani, known for their versatility and immense repertoire of songs, Goa Amigos, one of Canada`s leading Indo-Goan bands and Deesha, a Canadian singer of Indian origin.
