Buddhadeb and Rituparno Ghosh plan films & TV series on Tagore

NEW DELHI: To commemorate 150th birth anniversary of the Nobel laureate poet Rabindra Nath Tagore, renowned filmmakers Buddhadeb Das Gupta and Rituparno Ghosh have planned to make films and television series.

While Dasgupta is producing 13 short films on 13 poems of Tagore, Ghosh will make a documentary titled �Home and the Word'. The films have been approved by the screening committee under the chairmanship of veteran writer-director Shyam Benegal, along with financial assistance from the Government.

The production of films is at different stages. It is planned that all these films would be released during the commemoration year itself, Culture Minister Selja told a press meet here.

The Culture and Information and Broadcasting Ministries have collaborated for preparing a collection of six DVDs containing Tagore's Stories and films like �Khudito Pashan' (Hungry Stones), �Teen Kanya' (Three Daughters), �Kabuliwala', �Ghare Baire', �Char Adhyay'(Four Chapters) and biography of Tagore with a special feature �Natir Puja' by Satyajit Ray with sub-titles in English.

This set of six DVD pack was released earlier. The DVD collection is being sub-titled in eight major foreign languages for distribution in the international arena through Indian Missions abroad. This is likely to be completed by December 2011.

Meanwhile, the Culture Ministry has introduced the �Studio Theatre Scheme' under which compact performing spaces and �baithaks' for musicians and vocalists can be set up. Groups throughout the country can build their own creative spaces with a grant from the Ministry up to Rs 5 mn in metro cities and Rs 2.5 mn in other places.

A large number of applications have been received. The expert committee has been nominated and its first meeting is scheduled for 16 November.
