Boyzone's Stephen Gately no more

MUMBAI: Stephen Gately, a singer from the popular irish boy band Boyzone passed away on 10 October, 2009. He was 33. Gately was with his partner Andrew Cowles in Spain when he passed away 

Gately grew up on Sheriff Street in Dublin before he made it big with Boyzone. Gately has five siblings, of which, he was the fourth.

Though the exact cause of his death is not yet clear, according to news reports, the singer is believed to have died of natural causes. Gately made headlines a decade ago when he revealed his sexual orientation to a British newspaper and came out as a gay 

Boyzone was a U.K. hitmaker in the 1990s but when into oblivion as the band split. The band had announced a comeback tour at the end of last year. Like Ronan Kneating, Gately too released several solo singles and appeared in stage musicals such as  Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat   

Known for their chart topping singles like the Beeges cover version of 'Words', Boyzone was considered as one of the biggest acts to come out of Ireland in the 90s. The group sold millions of records during their peak.

Boyzone came into being in 1993 after Louis Walsh, a music manager, placed an ad in the press announcing auditions for Ireland's first boy band. Walsh wanted to create an Irish version of Take That, which the papers picked up on when Walsh advertised the open auditions. The band created was Boyzone which eventually garnered international success achieving 16 top three singles, six of which were Number 1s, as well as four Number 1 albums selling over 12 million copies worldwide.
