Bollywood no longer offers my kind of music: Pyarelal

MUMBAI: Pyarelal Ramprasad Sharma, legendary Bollywood composer of Laxmikant-Pyarelal fame is an epitome of perfection. The living legend’s great passion for music has driven him for over 50 years in Indian cinema.

At the young age of eight, Pyarelal Ramprasad Sharma fondly now as Pyarelal started his musical journey. Most commonly associated in the film fraternity with his partner in crime Laxmikant, the maestro is known for his music contribution in about 635 Hindi movies from 1963 to 1998. Time has taken Laxmikant away from him but Pyarelal still shares his music with the world.

Speaking with Radioandmusic.com the veteran says, “I started at the age of eight and learnt music for 3-4 years. In my early days, I always thought my music will work well but days passed, as violinist for ten years, as assistant arranger for nine years and then in 1963 ‘Parasmani’ my first film happened and from there my journey as music composer started.”

Laxmikant-Pyarelal (LP) has worked with filmmakers like Raj Kapoor, Dev Anand, BR Chopra, Shakti Samanta, Manmohan Desai, Yash Chopra, Subhash Ghai and Manoj Kumar. In 1953, they became assistants to Kalyanji-Anandji and worked with them till 1963. The first released movie which featured them as music directors was Babubhai Mistry's Parasmani (1963). LP’s music was very similar to Shankar-Jaikishan's music in the earlier days.

The legend’s love for Indian and western classical music is alive even at the age of 72. Although he is not signing bollywood films, he is doing live concerts across the globe.

He adds, “I don’t do film music anymore but that doesn’t mean I am sitting home. The kind of music, I want to do is not available so I am not doing music for bollywood. Today, I enjoy playing symphony orchestra and world music. For world music, I get 10-12 best musicians from India, America and Europe and I take them to Dubai World festival to perform. Now, I plan to carry this forward every year as it was a huge hit last year.”

In regards to the western melodies and contemporary bollywood music, he says, “Indian classical music should always be remembered. I am aware that modern era has come and so western music is gaining importance but the basic ragas should be maintained. However, we should have understanding of all genres of music.”
