Bollywood industry has become Nautanki: Daler Mehndi

MUMBAI: Change is the only constant; many sway with the need of the hour while a few choose to stand up to their moral ethics sometimes even at the cost of their success. One such name that identifies and justifies the true persona of his spiritual and moral ethics is Punjabi pop singer Daler Mehndi.

The changing trends in the Bollywood industry have always been a debatable issue, be it sensational romance introduced in the 70’s to the crude lyrics and item songs of 2000. Multi-talented singer Daler Mehndi is particularly vociferous on the new entertainment cultural of bold lyrics and vulgar songs.

Addressing bollywood as ‘Nautanki’ (acting), Mehndi says, “Today, Bollywood industry has become ‘Nataunki’ where people do drama and sell their shame. An actor like Kareena Kapoor who belongs to the first family of B-town and now the Khans grooves to such bad music only for success.  Singers are known to bring happiness by their melodies and not by vulgarity. For me money has never been a priority; it’s a reward for my work. I work for Bollywood but its never been my priority.” He highlighted that he chooses to stay away from the breed of young and irreverent music writers and is happy making soulful music.

When asked about the controversial lyrics of Yo Yo Honey Singh, he adds, “I don’t consider Yo Yo Singh as a singer/composer at all. I can talk about AR Rahman, Sajid-Wajid, Anu Malikji and many big names but Honey is not a composer for me and I refuse to comment anything about him.”

Recently Mehndi was in news for being dispossessed of 10 acres land at Sohna in Haryana by a sub-divisional magistrate court which also served him a 15-day notice for seizing another 100 acres of his farm house. The court gave the 10 acres land, seized from the singer, to the Sohna town municipal committee in Gurgaon district near Delhi.

When asked about it, he states, “I heard about the different news reports and I need to check on the entire issue, it is nothing big.”

Currently, he is more in a mood to promote his track ‘Mission Love’. The song with ‘love you love you love you’ chant is aimed at spreading love and making world a peaceful place.  He says, “If we give love we get it back. The song is composed to give a divine feel. It can be used at several occasions from religious shrine to party spaces. I developed the concept to spread love and humanity. This song is to give infinite love.”

He adds, “I received great response from the audience during my live performance in Gujarat and Punjab. Seeing the response, I am hopeful that many people will enjoy it. I am using YouTube as a medium to spread my song.”
