Axed BBC radio 6 Music wins at Sony Radio Academy Awards

MUMBAI: BBC digital radio station 6 Music, that is facing the axe received two Gold awards at the Sony Radio Academy Awards.

Adam Buxton and Joe Cornish, who present a Saturday morning show on the station, won the Gold award for Best Comedy. Jarvis Cocker, the Pulp singer who also presents a show on the station, was given the Rising Star prize.

The victories at the Awards is said to give a boost for protestors hoping to persuade the BBC that the stations should be saved.

In the other categories, Radio 4 won a total of six awards including Gold award for the Best Breakfast Show and the Speech Broadcaster of the Year category was won by Sir David Attenborough, for his Life Stories natural history series on the station 

Music Broadcaster of the Year went to Zane Lowe of Radio 1. The station also won the best specialist music programme of the year award.

The Music Radio Personality of the Year was won by Scott Mills.

The BBC World Service won two awards, including best news and current affairs programme for Newshour and Lyse Doucet, who won news journalist of the year.

Radio 5 Live took the top prize of UK Station of the Year, beating fellow nominees Absolute Radio and TalkSport.
