AR Rahaman and Vishal Bhardwaj are special: Sukhwinder Singh

MUMBAI: Sukhwinder Singh is one of the most popular singers of India, with admirers all over the world. His popularity reached greater heights with his song 'Jai Ho!' which won international honours like the Academy Award for the 'Best Original Song' and a Grammy Award for the 'Best Song'. He has delivered many musical hits with his style and presentations having worked with many musician in his career. But as a singer, he feels musicians like AR Rahman and Vishal Bhardwaj are special and the new ones miss the charm.

Speaking with Radioandmusic.com, Sukhwinder Singh said, "There are many new talents that are born, but there is no one like Vishal Bhardwaj or AR Rahman; they are special. Meanwhile, amongst the lyricists there are personalities like Prasoon Joshi and Swanand Kirkire, who are parallel to Gulzarji and have started to make an impact with their writing. Sameer is also one such lyricist. They are special people but they are few."

He also highlighted how music has changed across the different eras. "We had different eras of music, but for the song to create a trend it has to be good. A trend can’t create a good song," he further added.

As per many musicians, the new era of music is dominated by tunes and lyrics which do not form a connect with the audiences and are thus easily forgotten. While technology for newer sounds is developing and helping the industry move forward, lack of melodies and good music is acting as a deterrent for growth.

Speaking about the latest trend of crass lyrics, Singh expressed his concern and stated, "The trend of dirty lyrics has started and one can’t stop it. Freedom to express is there but we need to know where to fence it."
