MUMBAI: AOL has just announced an update to Winamp, one of the world's most popular media players with over 73 million users globally.

According to the company, Winamp 5.55 offers users a collection of new product enhancements, with some consumer features tailored to international audiences. The new updates include a comprehensive multimedia artist discovery experience, a commerce platform to purchase digital downloads and ringtones, iTunes and iPod syncing capability and a new Online Services program. The Winamp web site has also been updated with an artist discovery section, http://www.winamp.com/music, and a merchandise store.

For the first time, Winamp 5.55 now offers an online services program that allows third party web services developers to embed their web sites into Winamp. Developers have access to Winamp APIs and documentation to build and publish their own online services at http://dev.winamp.com and add to a growing library of third party services.

Winamp 5.55 boasts improved iPod sync support. In addition Winamp now allows users to import their iTunes library into Winamp with just a simple click. Winamp also now supports past and current generation iPods allowing users to sync their media library and playlists to their iPod.

Winamp's artist discovery experience leverages AOL Music,  the Truveo video search engine and SHOUTcast Radio to provide music fans with access to artist songs, bios, news, related videos, radio stations and photos. Users can get extended information about artists they already know, or discover new artists by exploring recommended artists that are either similar to or have influenced their favourites. Users can enjoy the artist discovery feature in Winamp 5.55, or on the web at http://www.winamp.com/music.

AOL started its India operations in 2002 and went on to set up the India Portal (www.aol.in) in April 2007.
