Americal Idol switches label from Sony to Universal

MUMBAI: With expiry of Sony's contract, American Idol's hunt for a new label has come to an end as Simon Fuller, the creative brain behind the show has struck a deal with Universal Music Group to release albums recorded by stars of the TV show.

The terms of the distribution deal between 19 Entertainment, which produces the programme, and Universal is similar to the agreement that was signed between 19 and Sony Music.

We like delivering hits and new artists,... said UMG co-chief executive Lucian Grainge to the media. The label's deal with American Idol was the right combination at the right time..., he added.

The recording company might have been chosen as the apt candidate due to Fuller's existing relationship with fellow Brit and new Universal CEO Lucian Grainge.

With Idol celebrating its tenth season, I wanted to inject some new power and weight behind our brand,... said Fuller. It is exciting to have the world's biggest show partnered with the world's biggest music company...

After signing a deal with UMG, Fuller is now only left with the task of hunting for a judge to replace the wisecracking and talented Simon Cowell.
