Akshay not part of dad's Soul India tour

MUMBAI: Musician Akshay Hariharan will not be joining his illustrious father musician-composer Hariharan on his upcoming North American Soul India tour.

Hariharan Jr’s dates will be blocked by finishing touches to his yet-to-be-titled album (Universal) that will be released in the UK in July-August clashing with his father’s tour which begins from September.

The tour will take Hariharan Sr and his 17 member troupe across venues in US and Canada.

Promoters are targeting a total of 15 concerts New Jersey, Connecticut, Atlanta, Austin, Portland, Seattle, San Jose among others. So far 12 cities have been confirmed.

“I have performed with my father in over 50 Soul India shows across the world including one in front of 60,000-70,000 people on my third show with him. I’m afraid I will not be able to join him for this year’s tour because I am releasing my Indian electronic album in July in the UK. The deal will be under Universal label, but other electronic labels may pick it up,” Akshay Hariharan told Radioandmusic.com.

Another factor that will keep him away from stage is his second film project for which he is composing six songs. The dark and moody film is also slated for a July release.

Also speaking with Radioandmusic.com, Hariharan Sr said the India Soul tour will present a collage of all his styles including ghazal, Colonial Cousin material and Indian Classical music.

“People have liked the tour and the songs over the years because there is so much of variety. The audience is usually NRI but there are a lot of foreigners who come for the show now,” he said.

Premiering at Singapore’s Esplanade in November 2002, Hariharan has performed around 500 Soul India shows all over India, Middle East, UK, USA, Singapore, Australia and Lagos.
