MUMBAI: All India Radio and Doordarshan should play a major role in spreading wareness among rural people on the policies and measures taken by the Centre and state governments, Union Minister of State for finance S S Palani Manickam said in Chennai on Wednesday.

"Today the media is giving more importance to entertainment and sensitive issues. As an arm of the Central government, Doordarshan and All India Radio need to take up issues relating to the welfare of rural people," he said, speaking at a three-day seminar organised for part-time correspondents of AIR and Doordarshan by Prasar Bharati here, says a PTI report.

He said they had a duty to do so as the two organisations have received accredition from the Central Ministry.

Earlier, AIR Additional Director General Sadhana Rout said the challenge today lies on the content of programmes in radio to increase the number of listeners.

"There is a strong revival of radio these days and it is the responsibility of Prasar Bharati to give more consumer oriented programmes (to increase its listeners)," she said.

Rout told the 12 freshers and 13 experienced Part Time correspondents taking part in the programme that there is a need to give a local flavour to stories in the area they represent. 'As a Correspondent you need to get sto+ries of daily struggles made by the common man in your area,' she said.
