MUMBAI: In a bid to pay tribute to legendary playback singer Mukesh on his 36th death anniversary, Bollywood music channel ‘9X Jalwa’ has planned special programming on 27 August.

The channel will air legend’s timeless tunes and series of short musical shows throughout the day.

Speaking about the initiative, a 9XM channel official said, “We are airing Mukesh’s songs on ‘Dil Se’ – the romantic time band (9 pm to 11 pm) and on ‘Jee Le Dobara’ – the black & white band (11 pm – 12 am). We will also showcase interesting trivia on Mukesh through our short format shows namely ‘Mini Recharge’ and ‘Kassette Kahaniyan’.”

Mukesh, born on 22 July 1923, was discovered by a distant relative when he sang at his sister’s wedding. His first song was ‘Dil Hi Bujha Hua Ho To’ as an actor-singer for Nirdosh. He got his break as a playback singer for actor Motilal in 1945 with the film Pehli Nazar with music composed by Anil Biswas and lyrics written by Aah Sitapuri. The first song that he sang for a Hindi film was ‘Dil Jalta Hai To Jalne De’. Mukesh, who lent his voice for actor Raj Kapoor, became part of a charmed quartet that included the country’s legendary playback singers like Mohammad Rafi, Manna Dey, Talat Mahmood and Kishore Kumar.

Mukesh died of a heart attack on 27 August 1976 in Detroit, Michigan, USA, where he had gone to perform a concert.
