Watch out for the multi-talented Papon on Coke Studio@MTV

MUMBAI: Multifaceted artist Papon is a singer, composer, programmer, producer-born in Assam to two very popular and respected musicians of the region, Archana Mahnata and Khagen Mahanta. Born to two brilliant singers, music has been there in his veins, his pulse as well as his ears since he was born.

Interestingly, the popular Papon is not his original name and is born as Angaraag Mahanta. Famous Indian poet and lyricist Gulzar suggested to him to use his nick name. His nickname is what got him recognition and over the years came to be known by this name. Therefore, contrary to usual singing style of boundary-free renditions, he was quite keen on singing a Ghazal! Catch him belt out some soulful Ghazals on this week's episode of Coke Studio@MTV followed by an amazing fusion of Gwalpuria and Assamese sounds with singer Shruti Pathak.

His initial training has been in Indian classical and traditional music. Heavily inspired by the wide array of sound that he has been exposed to, from the traditional Vaishnavite devotional songs of Assam to new-age electronic, Papon's music is new and free. Papon has managed to create a separate identity with his debut album Jonaki Raati, which recently hit the stalls in Assam.

Don't miss this week's episode of Coke Studio@MTV on 8th July 2011, Friday at 7p.m. only on MTV.
