Kerala's New York Festival Award winning breakfast show Kozhikode Super Fast kick started Vegetable Vacation - a Vacation Special in the first week of April . With a slogan of 'Celebrate this Vacation with Mud, Seed and Deed', Radio Mango invited the youth to make this vacation fruitful by cultivating vegetables wherever they can, from tiny verandas, middling backyards to spacious terraces. It was a contest driven campaign to select and crown Mr.Green and Ms.Green based on the enthusiasm, and obviously, success of the contestants. And even if you had absolutely no idea what to do, Radio Mango would arrange for a team of consultants to visit and help you plan your patch, for free!
More than thousand people, most of them college going students participated in this campaign . Students were found cultivating anything from Tomatoes, Brinjals, Chilly, Cabbage, Beans, Ladies Finger.. Radio Mango boosted this activity with special ON AIR/OF AIR activities including field visits, airing of voice bytes of the contestants and agriculture experts. A thousand became 50, and from 50 Mr Green and Miss Green were crowned after 2 months of activity. The result – even though they were only two official winners, Kozhikode now has over a thousand home grown vegetable gardens and more are cropping up every day.
