Google India celebrates Children's Day by inviting young minds to design a Doodle

MUMBAI: From commemorating birthdays of notable people to lauding achievements in science to applauding big cultural events like the Olympics, Google Doodles have celebrated special days across the globe. We are happy to announce the Doodle 4 Google competition for 2012 with the theme of ‘Unity in Diversity’. With this we are inviting all children between the ages of 5 to 16 years to share their creativity by doodling on the Google logo.

Last year, we received over a 100,000 entries and this year with some interesting enhancements, we expect the excitement levels to go higher, as the contest will reach over 40 cities. Like every year, the winning Doodle will be featured on the Google (India) HomePage on Children’s Day (November 14th). The final winner of the competition will be announced at a glittering event in New Delhi on November 6.

Announcing this year’s competition, Nikhil Rungta, Country Marketing Head, Google India said, “Doodle 4 Google is a great opportunity for students to explore the intersection of art and technology, while sharing their talents and creativity on a national scale. Through this program we hope participants will have fun, think creatively and learn something new all at the same time. Last year’s winning Doodle by Varsha Gupta, from Delhi NCR, showcased in vivid detail that India is a land of different cultures, and music is an integral part of it. This year we expect the children of India to showcase to the world how India is united in diversity.”

Like every year, the participants will be grouped into three different categories: Group 1 comprising students from class 1 to 3; Group 2 with students from class 4 to 6; and Group 3 with students from class 7 to 10. The new thing that we are doing this year is to divide India into 4 regions - North, South, East and West. We will then have three shortlists from every region across each of the three groups The first round of entries will go through preliminary judging, post which 12 entries will be announced based on a selection by a panel consisting of independent judges. All chosen entries will be exhibited for public voting, and based on the number of votes, one winner from each group will be selected. The Jury along with the original Google Doodler will then choose the final winning Doodle from all the finalists.

Participating in the competition is simple:

• Children studying in class 1-10 can participate in the competition

• All participants must submit all necessary details along with their doodle mentioned in the form on the website (www.google.co.in/doodle4google). The submission may be either individually or through the school. The school route is valid only if the school is organizing to collect and submit the doodles on behalf of their students

• Last date for submissions is October, 23 2012

• After a series of elimination by celebrity panel of judges, 12 best Doodles will be displayed on the gallery (www.google.co.in/doodle4google). These entries will be open for public voting allowing users to vote for their favorite Doodle in each category

• The winning Doodle will be uploaded on the Google.co.in homepage on November 14, Children’s Day. All the 12 finalists will get a tablet and a Google kit.

About Doodle History:

Over the years, doodles on the Google homepage have made searching on Google more fun and enjoyable for its users worldwide. When doodles were first created, nobody had anticipated how popular and integral they would become to the Google search experience. Nowadays, many users excitedly anticipate the release of each new doodle and some even collect them!

Doodles are known as the decorative changes that are made to the Google logo to celebrate holidays, anniversaries, and the lives of famous artists and scientists. Having a little bit of fun with the corporate logo by redesigning it from time to time is unheard of at many companies but at Google, it is a part of the brand. While the doodle is primarily a fun way for the company to recognize events and notable people, it also illustrates the creative and innovative personality of the company itself.
