Amit Kumar: Kishore Kumar will remain till eternity

He went on to become one of the leading singers despite not being formally trained as a singer. He introduced the melodies of yodeling which still pulls the chords of our hearts. Kishore Da tried his hands in everything be it acting, singing, composing, scriptwriter, lyricist to film making. But till date, the world remembers him for his singing skills. A doting son- Amit Kumar cannot stop praising his legendary father Kishore Kumar.  Amit Kumar may have  sung many hits but he is still  honoured singing his father’s usual and unusual tracks. It was in 1987, that Kishore Da passed away but despite a couple of decades, rules our hearts.  He is  remembered for his melodies tracks like ‘Roop Tera Mastana', 'Mere Naina Sawan Bhado’  and various other chartbusters. Kishore Da celebrates his 84 birthday on 4 August.  For the same, Radioandmusic.com  spoke to his son Amit Kumar to get an insight about  his father.

On the occasion of my father’s birth anniversary on 4 August, there is a two and half an hour show organised “Zindagi EK Safar – ‘A Tribute to Kishore Kumar’ at Uttam Mancha in Kolkata and I shall be the lead vocalist and there will be many renowned local artistes.

During the show, I will be performing my tracks as well, first half is my tracks and the second half consist father’s track. Speaking about my tracks during the show include my first hit song Bade Achche Lagte Hain, Dil Ki Baat Kahin Lab Pe Na Aa Jaaye, Yeh Zameen Ga Rahi Hai, songs from film Tezaab and there are many songs that I sing. I will be singing all types of song for the show.

For deciding which tracks to be played in which show, we make files of the songs. But for Kolkata we have made an exclusive file which is completely different.  We have complied all his songs from the 50’s. For instance we are taking a track called 'Aaj Na Jane Pagal Manwa’ from the film ‘Begunnah’ composed by Shankar Jaikishan. The film was released on 1957 and it’s an absolute copy of Danny Kaye’s film ‘Knock On Wood’ so Paramount had filed a case and ‘Begunaah’ was banned. If the film wouldn't have been banned then it would have worked really well.  My fathers’ work in this song is remarkable; he had added the sound of hiccups. In most of the shows, I try to put his unusual tracks. I have to perform his hit songs but along with that I also play his unusual track. It is different feel to sing his songs on the stage.

Audiences that attend my event go back to my father’s era and starting imagining him in me. I have always got this feedback on my fan-page. There are so many people who would have not even seen Kishore Kumar but they think if Amit Kumar can do so much then how much would have Kishore Kumar done. Such are the compliments from music lovers.

Age has got nothing to do with the attendees in my show. Even a 20 year old comes to listen to my fathers' songs sung by me. Today’s generation also come to hear his songs and that is the power and magic that man had, even after 26 years after his demise. There is no doubt, that this man is the most popular. He is becoming popular day by day.

I have also participated on Aaj Tak’s Sureeli Baat for two episodes. In one episode, I will be speaking about my father and other episode I will disclose about my life to the audience. This will be aired soon.

He concludes saying that ‘Jab tak suraj chand rahe ga Kishore Kumar ka naam rahega…. Kishore Kumar and his song will continue till eternity.
