Runa Laila - 'It was difficult for me to come and go as and when I wanted in India'

Chances are that you will bob your head to the mention of "Mera Babu Chhail Chhabeela Main to Nachoongi" or jump off your chair to break into a jig for a "Dama Dam Mast Qalandar".

Bangladesh based singer Runa Laila, who made these songs popular and many others, is back once again in India with 'The great big Punjabi wedding'. On this elaborate concept album, the veteran singer is crooning some fun-filled Punjabi tracks which she recently recorded in Delhi.

For those who don't know, Runa Laila made a mark on Hindi filmdom after she sang 'Dama Dam Mast Qalandar' in the film Ek Se Badhkar Ek (1974). Her songs in Gharonda, which was released later, also went down very well with the audience  During her Bollywood stint, she worked with music majors like Jaidev, Kalyanji Anandji and Bappi Lahiri. However, soon after, she withdrew from Mumbai Despite being away, the veteran singer is clued into Bollywood music and speaks about some of her favourites from the current lot

Back home, Laila is also associated with several social causes like cancer -which she took up, as her sister too suffered from the disease Not only that, Laila is also appointed as an goodwill Ambassador for UN for which she is working with the youth in Bangladesh and spreading awareness about HIV AIDS

Speaking from Bangladesh with Radioandmusic.com's Chirag Sutar, the exceptional singer speaks about her recent project- the great big punjabi wedding, her favourite composers, and about things that kept her away from the Indian music scene for all these years

How did your recent project The great big Punjabi wedding' happen…

Music Today had approached me for this project; I really liked the concept because I had never really done wedding songs. I requested them to send me a demo of the songs.

But you have sung a lot of Punjabi songs in the past…

Right, but the traditional Punjabi wedding songs which are normally sung at wedding functions, are very different and were something I had not done before. I liked some of the tracks that Music Today had sent me. We selected a list of eight tracks, and then I came to Delhi and recorded the songs.

I believe you must have come to India after a long gap?

Well, I did a concert a couple of years ago. It's not that I have not been performing in India – but I haven't done any recording recently, that is true,

I do hear Indian Songs but didn't know that those very good songs became famous of this singer. It's really difficult for stars when the political connections between countries aren't good, I think Politics, Sports and Music and Film Industry should be kept separate although I know they're not so because all are judged by the public.
