I see the future of audio transitioning with digital: Greg Bebee, Sennheiser

MUMBAI: Sennheiser Director Professional Audio Greg Bebee, who visited India, this year finds digital quite promising when it comes to the future of audio.

Speaking about the same, he said, “I see the future of audio transitioning with digital, to online and virtual reality. Today, there are companies like Magically, who are able to create this virtual world with goggles. But, the audio dimension is still its emphasis and Sennheiser has been investing quite heavily and helping to shape that feature with our products like Sennheiser Ambeo Smart Headset to do binary recording while walking down the streets of Mumbai. We also have a virtual VR microphone for capturing content (virtual reality) and our Soundboard that will actually playback this 3D audio.”

On being quizzed about 3D audio technology, its working and how will it enhance people’s life, Greg Bebee explained, “There is an obvious desire of some to have an immersive experience at a concert or at any sporting event. But, it’s an unfortunate reality that if you can’t afford the best seats, maybe you don’t have the best sound. Also, in some parts of the world, if you wanted to attend an event, but it’s cold and you want to be comfortable too. So, I certainly can envision that in future, you want to be able to have the experience in the comfort of your home as if you were present at the event. This could be possible through the virtual reality imagery and 3D sound marrying together to give you the illusion that you are actually sitting in the best seat of the concert or a football match.”

Audio devices also lead to hearing issues. On being asked if Sennheiser is working on strategies to nullify the negative effects of rays emitted while hearing audio, Sennheiser Director Professional Audio Greg Bebee told, “Well, in our consumer division, we have headphones that attempt to this. One of the most recent entries is the Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless, which is an in ear headphone that provides noise cancelling. This will help you combat some of the noise around you, but will also allow for transparent hearing. For, example, if you were using these headphones to hear music, while jogging on the streets of Mumbai, you can suppress the outside noise with its transparent hearing and noise cancelling feature, while being able to hear the tractor coming behind you or the motorbike horn.”
