Ed Sheeran surpasses Eminem as most streamed artist on Spotify in UK

MUMBAI: Spotify has released its annual Year in Music list, and it has seen British pop musician- Ed Sheeran taking the top spot for most streamed artist in the UK for 2015, with over 59 million listeners.

The two-time BRIT award winner also managed to surpass rapper Eminem as the most streamed artist in UK with 3 billion steams. However, outside the UK, Spotify revealed that Canadian rapper Drake was the most steamed artist with 1.8 billion steams and 46 million listens.

In the female category, Rihanna took charge as most steamed female artist with one billion steams and 57 million listeners, while Beyonce took second spot, and was followed by British singer Ellie Goulding in third.

On the album front, two Canadian music artists dominated Spotify’s list. 60 million listeners made The Weekend's ‘Beauty Behind The Madness’ the most steamed album of the year, whereas Drake’s ‘If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late’ made it to the second spot.

Speaking on the development The Weeknd said, “It’s been an insane year working with some really talented people. Thank you to the fans on Spotify for making Beauty Behind the Madness the most streamed album of 2015."

For 2015, Spotify has had 75 million listeners, and more than 20 billion hours of music has been streamed on the music service.
